The Congolese rainforest is being exposed to deforestation by large multinational companies, such as those cutting wood to be exported, because the wood is good quality and strong…
Mining companies have also increased deforestation through their activities because large parts of the forest must be cleared for operations. The biggest obstacle is that people who do this to the forest have influence and power, and therefore they are not held accountable…

We had to operate in secret while we worked to get Remy out of the DRC. Thanks to a few early donors, in April we were able to get Remy out of the dangerous Goma area, and just last week we were able to get him a temporary place to stay with other African climate activists in Malawi. He’s there on a three-month tourist visa. This is not a long-term solution, and we need donations to keep Remy housed and safe while we find a more sustainable arrangement.
Remy has been staying in a hotel while Dominic searched for more affordable lodging. Dominic found a shared rental for Remy yesterday, April 30, which will greatly reduce the cost of Remy’s stay in Malawi. Monday we are wiring funds to Dominic to secure the rental and pay Remy’s hotel bill.

With the upcoming UN conference on biodiversity expected to focus on a proposal to protect 30% of the Earth by 2030, there has never been a better chance to protect Earth’s equatorial rainforests and restore them to health. You can listen to a 30 min interview with Paul Schaafsma on the 30×30 Campaign for Nature, that highlights the need to protect the Congo and all of Earth’s Three Green Hearts.
Climate activists like Remy need their voices heard. The Congo does not have enough public advocates, because of the perils of working there. Remy’s ability to speak for the Congo rainforest is invaluable right now.
Our goal is to help Remy with what are, in Malawi, modest living costs so he can focus on championing the Congo Rainforest and its indigenous peoples and centering their importance not only for Africa but for the world.
Millions of people depend on this forest for everything from medicine to agriculture, breeding land for their livestock, and water. As a result, many people’s way of life is in danger, along with the rainforest itself. That’s why I think it’s important to save this forest so we can also save the millions of people who depend on it for their livelihoods…
While we save the forest we must also be just as concerned about the people who depend on the forest. This is why I call on leaders at national and international levels to integrate the Indigenous people of the Congo at all levels of life. It won’t happen overnight, but it is possible.
